5 Small Business Bookkeeping Steps to Take Before the Sept. 15 Estimated Tax Deadline
Clermont, United States – June 27, 2026 / Cal The Bookkeeper /
CLERMONT, Fla. — June 26, 2026 — With the third-quarter estimated tax payment deadline approaching on Sept. 15, Cal The Bookkeeper is encouraging small business owners to complete a mid-year financial review rather than waiting until year-end to examine their books.
The firm, operated by bookkeeper Calicia Landry, says the midpoint of the calendar year is an often-overlooked checkpoint that can help business owners correct errors, plan for upcoming tax obligations, and enter the second half of the year with accurate records.
“Waiting until December or tax season to look at the books often means small problems have had months to grow,” Landry said. “A mid-year review gives owners time to fix issues while there is still time for those corrections to matter.”
To help small business owners prepare, Cal The Bookkeeper outlined five steps to review before the September deadline:
- Reconcile accounts now. Matching bank and credit card statements to the books mid-year prevents discrepancies from accumulating and becoming harder to resolve later.
- Review first-half cash flow. Comparing income and expenses across the first two quarters can reveal seasonal patterns and spending trends that inform second-half decisions.
- Check the estimated tax position. Reviewing year-to-date income before Sept. 15 helps owners gauge whether their quarterly estimated payments are on track.
- Clean up miscategorized expenses. Correcting misclassified or uncategorized transactions improves the accuracy of financial reports and reduces work at year-end.
- Verify payroll and contractor records. Confirming employee payroll details and 1099 contractor information mid-year helps ensure accurate reporting when annual forms are due.
Landry noted that an accurate set of books supports decisions well beyond tax filing. “Clean records in July make every decision easier for the rest of the year, whether that’s setting aside money for estimated taxes or deciding when to hire,” she said.
Cal The Bookkeeper works with small businesses, freelancers, and startups, providing services that include bookkeeping, payroll, account clean-up, 1099 processing, workers’ compensation audits, and sales and use tax filing.
