“Reviewed By Jamie Michele for Readers’ Favorite
In Forward Only, David Watson recounts growing up in Texas with his grandparents, Grandma and Pawpaw, whose home gave him his first sense of belonging. Losing Pawpaw at twelve changes that home, and adolescence is marked by a habit of leaving whenever he cannot see a place for himself. Teenage runaway trips mark the beginning of a pattern that follows him into adulthood. Each job can look like a fresh start, with love seeming to offer the home he has been searching for. Again and again, David believes the next place will be different, even as his decisions keep pushing him farther into trouble. Forward Only follows the years in which running becomes his answer to almost everything, as the lessons he learned from Pawpaw wait for him to understand what moving forward really asks of him.
David Watson’s Forward Only is an exceptional memoir, and I loved how conversational the writing is, making astonishing episodes sound like stories told across a kitchen table. He is fantastic at making the people around him feel familiar, particularly Nikki, whose fierce devotion comes through when she takes a second job to make his bail before accepting his collect calls at the restaurant during her shift. I loved how well he captured his son Justin’s individuality, like during a visit to Disney World when the little boy was happiest back at the resort arcade with a game in his hands. There is a wonderful honesty to the way the memoir looks back on the decisions he made across the years. Well written and candid, readers who enjoy memoirs about accountability and second chances will embrace this.”
